GOITER

A goiter is an umbrella term that refers to any swelling or enlargement of the thyroid gland in the neck. Although some goiters are caused by thyroid problems like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism (these are called toxic goiters), others occur in people with normal thyroids (these are called diffuse goiters).

THYROID CANCER

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is a relatively rare disease, about 15,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in the United States and between 1,500 and 2,000 deaths are attributed to it annually. Of all the cancers you could get, thyroid cancer is probably the least dangerous and has a high cure rate. Most cases are not aggressive and develop slowly.

PLUMMERS NAILS

Sign of hyperthyroidism. Nails start to rise on the ends which allows dirt to enter underneath. Usually starts with the 4th finger before spreading to the other fingernails and toenails.

THYROID NODULE

Nodules

Thyroid nodules refer to any abnormal little bumps which sometimes grow on the thyroid gland. The thyroid is nearly always growing nodules and most are so small they are never discovered or if they are discovered, they turn out to be of little concern. In fact if they did not grow in such a prominent place (the neck), most of the time they would be missed. As it is, any that are discovered usually need to be examined in case they are cancerous.

Young woman with a rapidly growing left thyroid nodule. She also had mild dysphagia (difficulties swallowing). The left part of her thyroid was removed during a surgery called a hemithyroidectomy.
