AMNIOCENTESIS TEST

Amnio

Amniocentesis Test
This test
helps clarify results from earlier blood tests or scans. It offers a more concrete diagnosis on chromosomal abnormalities, fetal infections and possible birth defects.

Amnio procedure

Amniocentesis Procedure
Your baby and placenta are located using an ultrasound scan. Your abdomen may be numbed with an injection of local anesthetic, but because the injection can be as painful as the procedure itself, many practitioners chose to avoid it. Then, a long hollow needle (usually 3.5 inches long) is inserted through your abdominal wall, into your uterus and a small amount of amniotic fluid is drawn from the sac surrounding the fetus. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. Amniocentesis is nearly 99 percent accurate in diagnosing or ruling out conditions such as Down syndrome.

CVS TEST

CVS

Chorionic Villus Sampling
A CVS involves taking a tiny sample of placenta tissue during early pregnancy to test for signs of genetic defects in the developing embryo. It can be used to detect hundreds of disorders including Down syndrome, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome and Tay-Sachs. A CVS is performed in week 10 to 13 of pregnancy. Its main advantage over an amniocentesis test is that it can be performed earlier in the first trimester of pregnancy. This means a woman can hopefully receive reassuring results sooner.

FETAL NON-STRESS TEST

A simple test to check the heart-beat of your baby.

DOULA

Doula

Doula Assistance
A doula is a woman who is trained as a childbirth companion. Doulas are becoming increasingly popular as studies show that women supported by doulas are less likely to require a C-section delivery, induction or epidural pain relief.

BIRTHING CLASSES

Birthing Classes

Lamaze Class
Offered through hospitals and birthing centers, birthing classes (commonly called Lamaze classes) offer practical advice to pregnant women on pregnancy, delivery and childbirth and ways to control pain.

BIRTHING CENTER

Birth Center

Birthing Suite at a Birthing Center
Also known as childbearing centers and maternity homes, birthing centers are independent homelike settings which offer a low-tech personalized center for childbirth. Many centers also offer prenatal appointments, birthing classes and breastfeeding classes.
